A Suspended World

This series was created during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time marked by uncertainty, fear, and profound disorientation. After my employment at an art gallery was terminated, my days became unstructured and unfamiliar. The world felt paused—quiet, unsettled, and difficult to recognize.

I found myself drawn to moments that held both ending and continuation. I photographed the gallery as it was being dismantled, saying goodbye to a space that had once felt like a future. At the same time, I turned toward small, grounding rituals—spending time outdoors with my child, seeking movement, air, and a sense of normalcy within the constraints of social distancing. Playgrounds and green spaces became places of both care and quiet tension.

These images were captured on a Lomography Diana Mini, a half-frame 35mm film camera. Its soft focus, light leaks, and unpredictability echo the emotional texture of that time—fragile, dreamlike, and often surreal. Through techniques such as double exposure, inversion, and disorienting perspectives, the images resist a fixed sense of place or time, mirroring the instability and fragmentation of lived experience during this period.

This work is not a record of events, but a reflection of what it felt like to move through them. It holds a quiet tension between loss and presence, between uncertainty and care. In revisiting and developing this film now, I see it as a way of reconnecting with that version of myself—one who navigated change through observation, and found meaning in small, fleeting moments of stillness.

What remains are fragments of a suspended world - where memory, perception, and reality begin to blur.
